DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will review the methods for studying the limit 
 of infinitely many quantum particles interacting through the Coulomb poten
 tial\, like electrons and nuclei in ordinary matter. I will in particular 
 present a new approach which generalizes previous results of Fefferman\, L
 ieb and Lebowitz. This is joint work with Christian Hainzl (Birmingham\, A
 labama) and Jan Philip Solovej (Copenhagen\, Denmark).\n
