 versity of Exeter)

DESCRIPTION:As the number of interstellar tracers continues to grow\, the
21cm spectral line of neutral hydrogen (HI) remains one of the primary wid
e-scale delineators of galactic structure. I will briefly review the rebi
rth of galactic plane HI surveys that began in the mid-1990s\, before an i
n-depth overview of more recent efforts to image the galactic HI distribut
ion with the Arecibo L-band Feed Array\, including the recently completed
I-GALFA survey. Next I will describe a project undertaken at the Universi
ty of Exeter which involves creating a "synthetic" galactic plane survey u
sing computational simulations of a Milky-Way-type galaxy. I will close w
ith an overview of the planned galactic HI (and OH) projects that will com
prise GASKAP\, a Survey Science Project to be carried out with the Austral
 ia Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder.
