DESCRIPTION:I review the processes that govern protoplanetary disc evoluti
 on\, focusing in particular on the outer regions of discs (beyond a few te
 ns of AU). I will highlight the mechanisms by which gas is removed from th
 e outer disc\, and discuss a number of new theoretical results in this fie
 ld. I will also consider the link to observations\, and discuss how observ
 ations of both discs and planets can inform our understanding of how proto
 planetary discs evolve.
