DESCRIPTION:I will talk about one of the strengths of applying analytic me
thods in contrast to numerical procedures. In particular\, I will examine
what information can be extracted from a Wiener--Hopf equation even if the
solution cannot be explicitly derived. This will lead to the idea used in
diffraction theory called the embedding formula. It provides a way of exp
ressing a solution of a diffraction problem in terms of solutions of simil
ar problems but with different forcings. This allows to reuse solutions an
d hence reduce computational cost.\nThis is joint work with Andrey Korolko
 v.
