DESCRIPTION:We present several approximations in the theory of Laplacian t
 ransport near complex or heterogeneously boundaries. This phenomenon\, gov
 erned by the Laplace operator\, is ubiquitous in fields as diverse as chem
 ical physics\, hydrodynamics\, electrochemistry\, heat transfer\, wave pro
 pagation\, theory of elasticity and random processes. We overview the math
 ematical basis and various applications of the effective medium approximat
 ion and the related boundary homogenization when a complex heterogeneous b
 oundary is replaced by an effective much simpler boundary.&nbsp\; Two para
 meters of the simplified boundary (its position and effective impedance) a
 re calculated by means of conformal mapping or matched asymptotic expansio
 ns. Some specific examples are discussed in detail.
