DESCRIPTION:Inhomogeneities in structure and chemistry can play a signific
ant role in the overall response of materials under shock compression. Und
erstanding this link between configuration and response is the key to deve
loping novel\, microengineered materials with tailored mechanical/chemical
behavior. In this talk\, I will describe the effect of intrinsic (melt te
mperature\, density\, yield strength) and extrinsic properties (particle s
ize\, shape\, orientation) on the behavior of powder mixtures\, with atten
tion to the initial densification response and subsequent reaction initiat
ion. Following the collective work on silicide- and aluminide-forming mixt
ures\, I will also present a conceptual framework for shock-induced reacti
ons\, which may be used to guide development of energetic systems with tai
 lored chemical response.
