DESCRIPTION:Quasinormal modes (QNMs) are damped oscillations that play an
important role in the dynamics of perturbations of stationary black hole s
pacetimes. They are governed by frequencies that are characteristic to the
black hole under consideration\, much like how the overtones of a vibrati
ng drumhead depend on its particular shape. Although extensively featured
in the physics literature for over fifty years\, a clear and broadly appli
cable mathematical definition of QNMs on asymptotically flat spacetimes ha
s remained elusive. In this talk\, I will briefly introduce initial attemp
ts at defining QNMs and then I will present upcoming work (with C. Warnick
) on the characterisation of QNMs on general stationary and asymptotically
  flat spacetimes.
