DESCRIPTION:The second astrophysical object ever detected in neutrinos\, a
fter the Sun\, was Supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The 24
or so neutrinos detected produced a huge flurry of theoretical papers\, bu
t really were too few to do much more than confirm the basic energetics an
d timescale of core-collapse supernovae. However\, if a supernova were to
occur in our Galaxy\, about five times closer\, today's much larger neutr
ino detectors would see thousands of neutrinos. What could this signal te
ll us about supernovae? What could it tell us about neutrinos? And is th
ere anything we can look for while we''re waiting?\n\n
