DESCRIPTION:The science of human genetics has developed at an incredible p
ace since the completion of the human genome project at the beginning of t
he century. We now know the genetic basis for thousands of rare disorders\
, and enormous progress has been made towards understanding the genetics o
f common complex disorders such as diabetes and cancer. What affect will t
hese discoveries have on medicine and population health? The new field of
consumer genomics – genetic tests available directly to the public via t
he internet – has recently brought this question into the media spotligh
t\, and raises numerous wider issues about the usefulness of genetic profi
ling\, an individual’s right to privacy and confidentiality\, and the po
tential for discrimination. \n\nAn informal introduction will be given by
Dr Caroline Wright (PHG Foundation) followed by a discussion and refreshme
nts.\n\nThis FREE event is sponsored by the MRC.\n\nCafe Scientifique is a
place where anyone can come to discuss the science that is changing our l
ives with the people who are making the discoveries. Join us every month\,
when a different scientist will informally discuss their work and take qu
 estions from the floor.
