DESCRIPTION:This talk will introduce the audience to the latest developmen
ts supply chain\ntechnology research at the Boeing Company. Themes include
Rapid Materials\nResponse\, the Hybrid Intelligent Supply Chain and Self-
serving Assets. The\nself-serving assets project\, developed in collaborat
ion with the Distributed\nInformation and Automation Lab at the Institute
for Manufacturing\, will be\npresented in detail. This exciting project bu
ilds a powerful blend of RFID\,\nsensors\, and Artificial Intelligence sof
tware\, with which aircraft assets are\nmade self-aware and goal directed\
, and aim to maximise their life in service\nthrough contacting\, selectin
g\, procuring and monitoring service providers. The\nresult is an open\, c
onsistent service chain where complex database transactions\nare eliminate
d and an emergent\, yet rather self-capable system starts to\nmaterialise.
Assets use multi-criteria decision making to select among\nproposals\, an
d handle competition through auctions. They are able to learn from\npast d
ecisions\, and balance the goals of their various stakeholders. The\nproje
ct aims to provide a flexible architecture that will ensure decision\nopti
mality\, be customizable\, and scalable as we are potentially looking into
a\ntechnology that could see thousands of autonomous assets in the supply
chain.\nThe project raises various interesting research questions such as
: What methods\ncan we formulate for distributed control of emergence? Can
we reduce the\nBullwhip affect in the supply chain through automated cont
rol and learning? How\ndo we ensure truthfulness in automated systems?
How do we balance\nstakeholder goals in an asset's lifecycle? These quest
ions help us shape the\nself-serving asset\, which brings about a powerful
technology and an operational\nshift in service and maintenance.\n
