DESCRIPTION:We explain the notion of a cone structure with a characteristi
 c conic connection\, which arises from the theory of minimal rational curv
 es in algebraic geometry. We study the relation between torsion tensors of
  principal connections on G-structures and characteristic conic connection
 s on associated cone structures. We formulate a sufficient condition under
  which the existence of a characteristic conic connection implies the exis
 tence of a torsion-free principal connection. This sufficient condition ho
 lds for adjoint representations of simple Lie algebras different from type
  A or C. This is a joint work with Qifeng Li.
