DESCRIPTION:Empathic abilities serve important functions in human social i
nteraction\, bringing people together and motivating them to help others a
nd be considerate or even selfless. But how early in ontogeny can empathy
for others be observed? And when does it begin to show trait-like consiste
ncy or to predict later adjustment? \n\nAddressing these and related quest
ions\, my talk summarizes key findings from several studies on the develop
ment of empathy during infancy\, including in the first year of life. The
presentation covers conceptual issues\, assessment\, developmental traject
ories\, links to child outcomes\, and parenting predictors.
