DESCRIPTION:The talk provides a history of Leibniz's ideas about space by
looking at the archival material held in the Niedesachsiche Landesbiblioth
ek in Hanover. Making use of manuscript sources\, I will show that\, contr
ary to standard readings\, Leibniz did not develop a relational theory of
space until 1688 \,when he read Newton's&nbsp\;Principia&nbsp\;and realize
d that he had to respond to the theory of absolute space with a new\, powe
rful\, and rich alternative theory. The talk is the occasion of a reflecti
on on the role of archives in making history of mathematics and philosophy
 .
