DESCRIPTION:The talk will address the mythopoesis of the Italic genius in
mathematics during the fascist rule. In a perspective that combines histor
y of mathematics\, history of international relations and science diplomac
y\, the construction and forms of representation of the Latin spirit in ma
thematics will be investigated\, with particular reference to events such
as the Volta 1939 Conference\, Matematica contemporanea e sue applicazioni
\, and at the section Mathematics of the Universal Exhibition of Rome EU42
. Far from being specific to these case studies\, the rhetoric features an
d the hermeneutic categories that characterized the fascist mythopoesis ca
n be legitimately mobilized to set up an analysis of the monumentalization
of national mathematical traditions in other totalitarian regimes.
