DESCRIPTION:This talk will present the stochastic sandpile model\, which i
 s a natural candidate for an elementary model of self-organized criticalit
 y.It emerged as a variant of the abelian sandpile model\, with a behaviour
  which is expected to be more universal.\nI will present a recent joint wo
 rk with Concetta Campailla and Lorenzo Taggi\, showing that in all dimensi
 ons this model exhibits a non-trivial phase transition\, with a critical d
 ensity strictly between 0 and 1.This work builds upon techniques developed
  to study a closely related model known as activated random walks.
