DESCRIPTION:The development of microscopic imaging has been fundamental to
scientific advancement since the 16th century. Indeed\, as Freeman Dyson
declared\, “new directions in science are launched by new tools much mor
e often than by new concepts”. This talk will discuss the role of micros
copy in science and describe how the development of the scanning helium mi
croscope (SHeM) is revolutionising the imaging of materials and the potent
 ial impact of damage-free microscopy.
