DESCRIPTION:Polar marine species include charismatic polar bears and pengu
ins\, but also many species of plankton and fish. These lesser-known speci
es are small\, incredibly abundant\, and crucial for healthy ecosystems an
d climate regulation. Using examples from both the Arctic and Antarctic\,
I will demonstrate how we can use data driven models to i) understand the
distribution of these species\, and ii) provide evidence to support conser
vation and management decisions in the face of climate change. As well as
highlighting some exciting advances and ongoing work in this field\, I wil
l finish with some reflections of a different note - how creative forms of
storytelling including music and poetry can help us re-connect with and c
 ommunicate our research.
