DESCRIPTION:The strangeness of quantum theory largely lies in the fact tha
t there is no picture of reality arising from the theory. The Hilbert spac
e formalism\, which is 80 years old now\, almost inevitably comes with an
instrumentalist interpretation (unless one is willing to accept many world
s with their strange ontology). All statements involve measurements\, obse
rvers\, probabilities -- we learn nothing about a quantum system `in itsel
f'. In this talk\, I will sketch some aspects of the so-called topos appro
ach to quantum theory\, which aims to give a new mathematical formulation
of quantum theory\, including a new form of quantum logic\, and allows for
a realist interpretation.\n\nThere would be a wine reception after the ta
lk with the guest speaker.\n\nFree for members\, £2 for non-members.
