DESCRIPTION:In this week’s reading group\, we will discuss recent advanc
es in medium-range weather prediction and the key challenges that remain.\
nWe will start with an overview of the medium-range weather modeling pipel
ine and the types of data available for training large-scale AI systems. N
ext\, we will explore some of the critical considerations in designing suc
 h systems\, including:\nThe trade-offs between deterministic and probabili
stic approaches\,\nStrategies for integrating observational data into the
modeling pipeline\, and\nThe potential benefits of leveraging vast dataset
s governed by similar dynamical principles to train a foundation model for
  the atmosphere\, rather than a weather-specific model.\nWe will conclude
by highlighting some of the most exciting directions for future research.
LOCATION:Cambridge University Engineering Department\, CBL Seminar room BE
 4-38.
