DESCRIPTION:One of the many merits of P. Goddard is his contribution to th
e integration of quantum field theory in the mainstream of modern mathemat
ics. His work led to beautiful links between geometry\, the Lie algebras o
f infinite dimensional groups and modular partition functions\, all in CFT
\, which to a physicist means conformal field theory. To a mainstream math
ematician\, CFT means class field theory and concerns number fields and th
eir Galois groups. We have become used to miracles involving moonshine\, m
ock modular forms and all that\, but it is worth a smile that another deep
connection seems to be epitomized by this alphabetic coincidence.
