DESCRIPTION:This talk reviews the local approach to electronic structure\,
  including \nvon Laue's black body theorem\, the recursion method\, and co
 ntinued fractions. \nI will also talk about new work involving a generaliz
 ation of periodic boundary \nconditions.  This improves convergence even w
 hen there are band gaps\, and makes \nthe unphysical energy sheet numerica
 lly accessible.
