DESCRIPTION:Estimating personal energy expenditure with location data\, Si
mon Hay\n\nHuman inactivity has been associated with the incidence of a nu
mber of health conditions and chronic diseases\, while our increasing ener
gy consumption is a well- documented problem. A Personal Energy Meter migh
t help identify areas for improvement in our lifestyles that would benefit
both our personal health and the global environment. As one strand of thi
s\, we explore the possibility of estimating our own energy expenditure fr
om movement traces provided by location systems. This technique offers a n
umber of advantages over accepted accelerometer-based devices. We validate
a model which we then apply to analyse the physical activity and working
patterns of a total of 60 individuals spread across two separate offices.\
n\nCooperative Wireless Networks: Review\, Analysis and Optimization\, Wei
si Guo\n\nCooperative transmission is the latest idea to exploit multi-pat
h diversity rather than combat it. The speaker reviews the background and
existing work on cooperative wireless protocols\, and performs analysis an
d optimization with special focus on power control for practical networks.
