DESCRIPTION:This research examines nuclear energy sustainability in the Ar
ctic through next-generation\nnuclear technologies\, particularly small mo
dular reactors (SMRs)\, designed for remote\, o?-grid\nareas and extreme c
onditions\, including waste management. The study assesses how these\ntech
nologies can address extreme environmental and logistical challenges\, whi
le being\nperceived as high-risk for human health\, the environment\, and
 Arctic ecosystems.\n\nAdopting a socio-political and environmental perspec
tive\, the research integrates insights from\nscience and technology studi
es\, with a focus on nuclear energy as a form of technical hubris\,\nand o
n studies of risk\, disaster\, and decision-making. It explores collective
expectations\ntoward innovation\, societal narratives around nuclear ener
gy\, and the legacy of past programs\,\nhighlighting how scientific and so
cial practices shape each other.\n\nThe analysis emphasizes the role of nu
clear energy in Arctic energy transitions\, energy security\,\nand energy
justice\, in a context where climate change amplifies risks and a?ects leg
itimacy.\nThrough a comparative study of the Russian Arctic\, Alaska\, and
Finland\, including fieldwork in\nremote villages\, the study integrates
and values traditional knowledge\, highlighting its moral\nsignificance fo
r sustainable management\, while considering nuclear energy alongside\nren
ewable solutions. This approach moves beyond purely quantitative risk asse
ssments\,\nshowing how dialogues among diverse knowledge systems contribut
 e to integrated\, multi-level\ngovernance in the Arctic.\n\nKeywords: nucl
ear sustainability\, energy and cultural transition\, next-generation nucl
 ear\ntechnologies\, Indigenous knowledge\, STS imaginaries\, multi-level r
 isk and governance.
