SUMMARY:Gene-environment equivalence: the fundamental principle of Mendeli
 an randomization - George Davey Smith (University of Bristol)

DESCRIPTION:This talk will advance the notion of gene-environment equivale
 nce as the fundamental principle of Mendelian randomization\, from when it
  was introduced as an approach to strengthen causal inference regarding po
 tentially modifiable factors influencing human development and disease.&nb
 sp\; The biological basis and dimensions of equivalence will be presented\
 , and its relation to the consistency\n/treatment&ndash\;variation irrelev
 ance assumptions in causal inference.&nbsp\; The sanity-checking aspects o
 f gene-environment equivalence can be further extended through incorporati
 ng recent advances in the molecular biology of gene action.&nbsp\;
