DESCRIPTION:Electric Heavy Goods Vehicles (eHGVs) represent a critical pat
hway to decarbonising freight transport\, but long-term battery performanc
e and lifespan remain key challenges in terms of de -risking eHGV acquisit
ion for the operators. This presentation details a project investigating t
he degradation mechanisms in eHGV battery packs\, moving beyond simplified
laboratory testing to reflect real-world operational profiles. A data-dri
ven approach has been employed\, beginning with comprehensive data acquisi
tion from in-service eHGVs to characterise actual usage patterns. This fie
ld data informs the development of representative drive cycles for laborat
ory testing of lithium-ion cells. A key focus of the recent experimental w
ork is the impact of prolonged vibration exposure -and attempting to deter
mine if this is a significant factor in cell degradation. The resulting ex
perimental data will be used to validate and refine physics-based battery
degradation models\, ultimately enabling more accurate predictions of batt
ery life and informing strategies for optimised battery management and sec
ond-life applications in this demanding sector.
