of energetic composites - Kieran Heal\, PCS Group\, Cavendish Laboratory\,

DESCRIPTION:During their in-service lifetime\, PBXs may be subjected to a
range of damage situations\, with common ones recorded including thermal d
amage from temperature variations\, ageing and incidents during transport\
, handling\, and even 'horseplay'. The effect damage has on the mechanical
response\, microstructure\, and sensitivity is generally poorly understoo
 d. This severely hampers the utility of PBXs after they are subjected to u
nexpected conditions\, such as external loads. This study presents a serie
s of investigations into the effect of compressive load as a function of s
train rate\, damage extent and temperature on the microstructure\, mechani
cal response\, and shock initiation threshold.
