DESCRIPTION:This paper examines the place of sacraments in pictorial narra
tives that\nrecount exile from and return to Christian community. The main
focus is on the\nextraordinary body of bas-de-page pictorial narratives i
 n the Smithfield\nDecretals (London\, BL\, Royal 10 E IV)\, a canon law ma
nuscript that was\nilluminated in London c. 1340\, and in particular on im
ages of Sts Eustace\,\nJehan Paulus\, Thaïs\, and Mary of Egypt\; the leg
end of the Three Living and the\nThree Dead\; and the romance Octavian. It
argues that in narratives describing\njourneys that are simultaneously ph
ysical and spiritual\, sacraments\, and\nespecially baptism and the euchar
ist\, can operate dramatically and also\ndidactically as rites de passage.
Taken together\, such tales seem to prompt the\nviewer to consider the sa
craments as moments of rupture and also\nreconciliation.\n
