DESCRIPTION:The magnetic field of the earth\, which protects us from the s
 olar wind\, is subject to occasional reversals in polarity. The mechanism 
 for these reversals has not been identified. We propose one such mechanism
  here\, and describe a simple model which embodies the mechanism. The mode
 l is free of adjustable parameters\, and its predictions are in line with 
 the paleomagnetic evidence.
