SUMMARY:Who Gets Read? Attention\, AI\, and Mathematical Practices - Colin

DESCRIPTION:Mathematics produces far more results than any individual math
ematician can&nbsp\;read&nbsp\;or verify. As a result\, research communiti
es rely on structured patterns of&nbsp\;attention: what&nbsp\;gets&nbsp\;c
 irculated\, discussed\, cited\,&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;built upon. Today these pa
tterns are increasingly shaped by digital infrastructures such as preprint
platforms\, search tools\,&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;AI-based discovery systems. In
this talk I examine how such systems influence the allocation of&nbsp\;at
 tention&nbsp\;in&nbsp\;mathematical&nbsp\;research. Drawing on philosophic
al work on&nbsp\;attention\, I argue that digital tools reshape which prob
 lems&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;results receive sustained&nbsp\;attention\, thereby a
 ffecting how&nbsp\;mathematical&nbsp\;knowledge develops&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;w
hich lines of work come to define a field.
