DESCRIPTION:We often see art and mathematics as opposites&mdash\;emotion v
ersus logic&mdash\;but in this talk\, mathematician Marcus du Sautoy revea
ls a deep and surprising connection between them. He explores how mathemat
ical ideas like symmetry\, prime numbers\, and the golden ratio shape huma
n creativity\, from the earliest stone circles to the modernist architectu
re of Le Corbusier\, from Bach&rsquo\;s circular compositions to Radiohead
&rsquo\;s disruptive soundscapes\, and from Shakespeare&rsquo\;s hidden nu
merical clues to the Dada artists who embraced randomness. Instead of bein
g polar opposites\, Marcus will explore how we find a complementary relati
onship between mathematics and the arts that spans a vast historical and g
 eographic landscapes.
