DESCRIPTION:Web portals like Google Scholar and ScienceDirect have revolut
ionized access to scientific information by making it possible to identify
relevant papers via keyword search\, and then to browse them on-line. How
ever\, as scientific information continues to grow exponentially\, and as
(e-)science embraces automation\, keeping abreast of and exploiting the in
formation in these papers effectively is becoming impossible. I'll demonst
rate a system which returns sentences and images (rather than PDFs) in res
ponse to fine-grained queries utilising multifaceted image- and text-based
constraints constructed interactively and intuitively.\nI'll then outline
the technology behind the system and describe a\npreliminary evaluation t
hat suggests it is about 500x more efficient\nthan using Google Scholar an
 d a PDF viewer.
