DESCRIPTION:The analysis of complex fluid-structure interaction problems\,
such as\, e.g.\, the design of bio-inspired micro air vehicles\, requires
robust computational techniques for fluid-membrane systems. A major diffi
culty in this context is the accurate prediction of the flow features for
large structural deformations of the wings.\n\n\nIn this talk\, a numerica
l approach based on the concept of immersed methods is presented. Their ma
in advantage is that such methods are practically meshless and thus the co
mputationally expensive updates or rebuilds of the domain meshes are avoid
ed. With the main focus on the applicability to viscous incompressible flu
id flow\, our technique is derived from general variational principles. An
ongoing research is the application of the method to large-scale problems
from the field of animal locomotion.
