SUMMARY:Semantics\, Text\, and Biomedical Knowledge Discovery: Challenges
and Opportunities - Karin Verspoor - University of Colorado Denver

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will introduce the work we are doing at the\n
University of Colorado Denver on information extraction of biological\neve
nts from the biomedical literature. I will discuss the challenges\nof work
ing on text in this domain\, as well as the opportunities and\nadvantages
-- in the form of community-generated ontologies and other\nknowledge reso
urces -- that we have available to us. I will introduce\nthe notion of "3R
 " -- "Reading\, Reasoning\, and Reporting" --\ncomputational tools support
ing biomedical discovery\, and discuss the\nrole that text mining plays. O
ur current manifestation of this concept\nis the Hanalyzer\, an open-sourc
e data integration system designed to\nhelp biologists explain results obs
erved in genome-scale experiments\nand to generate new hypotheses. Hanalyz
er combines information\nextraction techniques\, semantic data integration
 \, and reasoning and\nfacilitates network visualization.\n
