DESCRIPTION:For many diseases\, there is likely to be a large variation in
  individual\nsusceptibility. This can be modelled by introducing frailty. 
 We shall give\nseveral examples\, in particular from cancer epidemiology a
 nd from cancer\nscreening. Frailty explanations can often be seen as compe
 ting with\nmechanistic explanations. Probably\, the degree of variation in
 \nsusceptibility is generally underestimated.
