DESCRIPTION:Energy and the environment are two of the most critical issues
facing our society today. Recent reports suggest that ICT is currently r
esponsible for a small but rapidly growing percentage of the global carbon
footprint. While “Green ICT” is a relatively new area\, there is a g
rowing awareness of the need for focused research efforts on this topic.
I will begin this talk by describe how the current computing and communica
tion paradigms have led to the current levels of energy use and the challe
nges we face in moving toward energy/ carbon-aware ICT. As an example of
what might be done\, I will describe results from our recent work on optim
izing IP routing in an \nenergy-aware fashion. That study began with th
e careful benchmarking \nthe energy use of several canonical examples of
IP routes. Using those measurements\, we then built an optimization model
that enabled us to consider how to minimize power consumption over a rang
e of network configurations and traffic profiles. Our results showed that
\nin some cases dramatic reductions in power consumption are possible.
\nI will conclude this talk by describing several of our current research
efforts that are focused on developing techniques and building tools that
will significantly reduce power consumption in ICT.\n\nBio: Paul Barford
is an associate professor of computer science at the University of Wiscons
in-Madison and a visiting professor at the Computer Laboratory at Cambridg
e University\, where he is also a Visiting Fellow at Wolfson College. Pau
l received a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois
and a PhD in computer science from Boston University. His research intere
sts are in Internet measurement and monitoring\, Internet security and pow
er-aware networking. Paul is the founder of the Wisconsin Advanced Intern
et Laboratory at UW-Madison. He was also the founder and CEO of Nemean Ne
tworks\, a network security startup company that was recently acquired by
Qualys\, Inc. Paul currently serves as Chief Scientist for Qualys. Paul
has served on national panels\, organizing and program committees for many
different conferences and workshops\, he was an associate editor for ACM/
IEEE Transactions on Networking\, and a member of the board of directors o
f the National Lambdarail - a research network service provider.\n
