DESCRIPTION:Accurate extraction of flow coherent structures is important f
or studies on transport and mixing processes in urban flows. \nRecent rese
arch show that Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) form the template of f
luid stirring and is an objective tool to characterize unstable motion in
nonlinear velocity fields. In this talk\, I'll discuss how LCS can be used
to evaluate urban transport processes. In particular\, I will show a rece
nt study of real-time remote-sensing data from Hong Kong International Air
port. Our study shows that LCS is capable of revealing air disturbances th
at are dangerous to aircraft operations during take-offs and landings. Th
is allows possible developments of more accurate turbulence indices based
  on Lagrangian measures.
