DESCRIPTION:The versatile technique of preparing multilayers by consecutiv
e alternating adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes can be ada
pted to coat sacrificial colloidal sub-strates. This enables fabrication o
f capsules with well-defined:\n\n- Size and shape - Wall thickness and com
position - Multiple components and variation along the normal\n\nConsequen
tly these capsules offer the control of the permeability along the normal
 via pH\, salt\, temperature\, light\, ultrasound\, or microwaves. They the
refore promise applica-tions in many areas making use of controlled releas
 e. Examples on this will be given by means of drug delivery and remote con
trolled release inside cells and of triggering of chemical reactions in en
zyme chemistry. The latter can be induced via multicompartment capsules or
via fusion of capsules containing different reactands.
