DESCRIPTION:Looking back at the last ten years of the UN Global Compact (2
000-2010)\, I discuss the achievements\, problems and current challenges o
f the initiative. Particularly\, I will consider the institutional context
and constraints of the Global Compact as a UN-backed initiative. The disc
ussion is structured around three main issue areas: (1) a retrospective as
sessment of achievements and problems of the Global Compact\, (2) a prospe
ctive view into the future and discussion of needed institutional reforms\
, and (3) a reflection of the current context in which the Global Compact
operates\, particularly considering the challenges created by the recent e
conomic downturn. My analysis positions the Global Compact as a network-ba
sed global governance arrangement reflecting a rapprochement between the U
N system and the business community.
