DESCRIPTION:The Antarctic continental margins\, where precursors to Antarc
tic Bottom Water are pre-conditioned\, are critical but under-observed reg
ions for physical processes affecting global climate. As the major UK cont
ribution to the International Polar Year project SASSI (Synoptic Antarctic
Shelf-Slope Interactions)\, a moored array was deployed from February 200
9 to February 2010 across the continental shelf and slope of the southeast
Weddell Sea. High vertical resolution sections were obtained from lowered
instruments during the mooring deployment and recovery. The moored and lo
wered instrumentation measured pressure\, temperature\, salinity and veloc
ity. A preliminary analysis of these observations will be shown to charact
erize the temporal variability and dynamics of the Antarctic Slope Front a
nd associated currents in this area.
