DESCRIPTION:Sarah Stone practiced midwifery in Somerset in the early eight
eenth century and published a book of her cases. My talk explores the text
ure of her practice and the ways in which she mobilizes Enlightenment cate
gories in ways we might not expect from a rural midwife. Indeed\, I argue
that she has much in common with William Cadogan\, the urbane physician to
the London foundling hospital who was a key architect of Enlightenment mo
therhood.\n\nMary Fissell is a historian of medicine\, gender\, and the bo
dy who teaches in the Department of the History of Medicine at the Johns H
opkins University\, where she also co-edits the _Bulletin of the History o
f Medicine_. She is the author of a number of articles and two books\, mos
t recently _Vernacular Bodies_ (Oxford\, 2004). She is currently working o
n a social and cultural history of _Aristotle's Masterpiece_\, the bestsel
ling book on sex and reproduction from 1684 into the 20th century.
