DESCRIPTION:Who will children accept and reject from their social groups?
How does this change as they progress through middle childhood? How do the
y reason about intergroup prejudice\, and how do they react when an ingrou
p member does something undesirable or disloyal? In this talk I will descr
ibe evidence a series of experiments testing the 'developmental model of s
ubjective group dynamics'. This model blends social psychological theory o
n social identity\, the 'black sheep effect' and deviance with development
al theory on prejudice and intergroup relations in childhood. This model p
oses challenges and new questions for established theories in both the soc
 ial and developmental areas.
