DESCRIPTION:The talk will give an overview of the techniques developed at
Glasgow University for the compilation of data parallel languages to SIMD
and heterogeneous multi-core computers. It will cover the Vector Pascal sy
stem\, which can be thought of as a Pascal with APL or ZPL extensions\, lo
oking at types for data parallelism\, SIMD and multi-core compilation\, el
imination of set and array temporaries\, automatic retargeting techniques.
It will also cover the problem of automatically parallelising the data pa
rallel subset of Fortran95 across the multiple processors of the IBM Cell
chip. Finally it will report on work underway to compile Matlab to SIMD ar
chitectures and the problems that this presents.
