DESCRIPTION:The mechanical part of the lungs can then be seen as a tree-li
ke domain (conducting airways) embedded in an elastic medium. The flow in
the upper part is inertial (incompressible Navier-Stokes equations)\, whe
reas inertia can be neglected for deeper branches\, which allows to use Po
iseuille's law for each branch\, and consequently discrete Darcy equations
on the corresponding subtrees.\n\nWe shall present how the decomposition
of the overall system onto those bricks based on different models can be c
arried out in terms of modeling and numerics\, and how it allows to obtain
realistic simulations of the ventilation process in the lungs at reasonab
 le cost.
