SUMMARY:Residual stresses: their role in structural integrity assessment a
nd advanced techniques for their analysis - Professor Mike Fitzpatrick\, H
ead of Department of Design\, Development\, Environment and Materials\, Th
 e Open University

CONTACT:Dr Geoff Hale
DESCRIPTION:Residual stresses can play a major role in influencing the str
uctural integrity of engineering components and structures. In safety-crit
ical components\, accurate knowledge of residual stress is required for da
mage \ntolerance calculations to be made effectively. This talk will revie
w recent advances in techniques for the measurement of residual stress at
large and small scales\, with examples from aerospace and power plant appl
 ications.\n\n
