DESCRIPTION:We show that the moduli space of $U^*(2n)$-Higgs bundles over 
 a compact Riemann surface is connected. We adopt the Morse-theoretic appro
 ach pioneered by Hitchin\, and which has already been applied for several 
 other groups\, to reduce our problem to the study of connectedness of cert
 ain subvarieties of the moduli space.  \nJoint work with O. Garca-Prada.\n
