DESCRIPTION:Petal spots have evolved in a phylogenetically broad range of
species and function as a pollinator attractant. They develop through the
accumulation of pigment in the pavement cells of the petal epidermis and i
n a small number of species\, including Gorteria diffusa\, also contain el
aborated epidermal cell morphologies. Identifying the genes encoding the r
egulators of petal spot morphology will allow us to formulate a model for
the pathway of petal spot development\, ultimately defining the molecular
events that have led to the evolution of this floral feature.
