DESCRIPTION:I will describe a novel technique to generate three-dimensiona
l Euclidean weavings\, composed of close-packed\, periodic arrays of one-d
imensional fibres. Some of these weavings are shown to dilate by simple sh
ape changes of the constituent fibres (such as fibre straightening). The f
ree volume within a particular chiral cubic example of a dilatant weaving
expands more than fivefold on filament straightening. This remarkable thre
 e-dimensional weaving\, therefore\, allows an unprecedented variation of p
acking density without loss of structural rigidity and is an attractive de
sign target for materials. It is proposed that this particular weaving is
formed by keratin fibres in the outermost layer of mammalian skin\, probab
ly templated by a folded membrane.
