DESCRIPTION:The efficient light emission and simple processing of organic
semiconductors make them attractive candidates for miniature visible laser
 s. In this talk I will discuss recent progress in developing very compact
optically pumped lasers\, notably including the use of GaN light-emitting
diodes as an indirect electrical drive for organic lasers. I will also des
cribe how organic semiconductors can function as very sensitive detectors
of nitroaromatic explosives vapours using a reversible quenching of the li
ght emission. When configured as thin-film distributed feedback lasers\, t
he presence of explosive vapours can be used to switch operation across la
ser threshold\, giving a rapid response to ppb concentrations of TNT-like
 molecules.
