DESCRIPTION:One problem facing the establishment of polyploids is fertilit
 y. Here I examine the potential role of chromosome divergence in establish
ing barriers between homeologues and populations\, enhancing fertility\, a
nd leading to polyploid establishment and subsequent divergence. I look at
the role of chromosome restructuring (especially inversions) in establish
ing barriers to recombination and then extend that understanding to data o
btained from natural and synthetic polyploids\, particularly in genera Tra
gopogon and Nicotiana\, where there can be a substantial chromosomal restr
ucturing. I consider how the organization and abundance of repeats in angi
osperm polyploids may influence meiosis\, which in turn will influence off
 spring fertility.
