DESCRIPTION:Surrealism and expressionism are artistic movements associated
  with altered consciousness and extreme emotion.  My talk will consider su
 rrealism and expressionism in their original historical context and commen
 t on their recent use by prominent picture book auteurs\, including Anthon
 y Browne\, Chris Van Allsburg\, and Allen Say.\n\nMary Galbraith teaches l
 iterature at San Diego State University.  Her work theorizes the new arena
 s of childhood studies\, picture book studies\, and cognitive poetics\, dr
 awing on close observation of literature and autobiography in conjunction 
 with trauma theory\, attachment theory\, cognitive linguistics\, and pheno
 menology.  \n
